The Quincy Star Follies donated $700 to Quincy High School from the 2011 show and will continue its commitment of raising money for Plumas County students!  This year, you can see the zany antics of the Quincy Star Follies cast at the Plumas County Fairgrounds Friday and Saturday, May 4th and 5th.  Featuring local folk from across Plumas County, this all-star lip sync variety show promises to wow and awe the audience even more than the three sold-out shows last year.  “We have an amazing committee of dedicated people and we have been meeting since a week after the last show” says Lisa Kelly, who introduced the Follies to Quincy after having performed in the Lake Tahoe shows in 2000 – 2003.

Casting is underway for the Star Follies where everyone on the stage is in the spotlight!  To perform in the Follies, all you need is a big smile, a great sense of humor as well as complete inhibition and a willingness to entertain and delight the masses!  The Star Follies features people from all over the county, adults and children alike.  With a goal of raising money for students, the show features youth with three “all-kid” numbers.  Students from local schools participate as cast members, assist with lighting and sound as well as advertising and promotion.  Rehearsals begin one month before the show in a kick-off all cast meeting followed by a weekend of one-on-one instruction with the show’s producers and directors.  During the month, cast members meet in their groups and practice, practice, practice.  Don Hertel, Director of the Star Follies returns to Quincy for his second year in our town, but his 36th year of production!

“I do it for the kids, and I do it for the cause,” said Kris Miravalle, who is on the planning committee.
“We have no auditions, so we can find a role for anyone,” claims Nancy Gambell, also a member of the planning committee. “We ask (prospective participants) to tell us their ability level and we find a place for them. Some people can't even count to music, but it's our job to make them look good on stage.”

While the money raised and subsequently donated to schools represents a direct benefit, Kelly said there is an added benefit to students who participate.  “The students involved gain a lot of confidence,” she said.   “Parents have told me their child really benefitted after having performed in the Star Follies.”  In addition,  “You get to know a lot of people, not just people my age, but a lot of other kids and adults as well,” said Kyleigh Green, 7th grade Follies Star.  This year, the show will feature dining and concessions in collaboration with the Plumas County Fairgrounds and local vendors.  The committee is seeking sponsorships, cast members and volunteers for the May shows.   For more information, call Lisa Kelly at 530-283-3956 or 775-232-536 or via e-mail at lisakkelly61@gmail.com.  Be sure to check out the Quincy Star Follies Facebook page and look for the website coming soon!
